Garlic prices up to 36 RMB per kg

'Garlic frenzy' has returned to China. In the past few days, the garlic price has risen continuously. On the retail market, a kg of garlic has already reached a price of 36 RMB.

Why does the garlic price surge up so quickly? Well, in the last two years, the garlic price was relatively low, so garlic farmers made cuts in the cultivation surface. Another reason is that the main cultivation regions have had to deal with decreased production. The garlic on the Dezhou market comes from Pizhou in Jiangsu and Laiwu, but mostly from Jining. Last year, these areas received a lot of rain and cloudy weather during the cultivation period. As a result there was 20% to 30% less production compared to last year and this pushed the garlic price upward.

Farmers expect the garlic will go in yearly cultivation around mid-October. With the current pricing, garlic farmers may be eager to cultivate more. That means the garlic price will probably go down next year. For now though, the garlic price remains stable.
