Turkey: Citrus growers hope for better export season this year

All hopes for Turkish citrus fruit producers lie in exports. Chair of Turkey’s Union of Chambers of Agriculture, Şemsi Bayraktar, says citrus fruit is Turkey’s leading fresh fruit and vegetable with a production of close to 4 million tons and an export figure of 842 million USD. Citrus fruit represents 46.2% of fresh fruit and vegetable exports in Turkey.

“According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, worldwide, annual production of citrus fruit stands at 136,3 million tons. Turkey is the 9th biggest producing country with a contribution of 2.7%” added Bayraktar.

This season, growers’ expectations are much higher as Russia lifts sanctions on Turkish citrus fruit.
