Lettuce is currently going on sale in large quantities, but because the weather was scorching hot this year, and rain only fell in small amounts, many lettuce production regions are suffering both in terms of quantity and quality. Fortunately, the lettuce production is a lot better in Linyi in Shandong province. Here, thanks to the hard work of the farmers, the harsh effects of the weather on the vegetables were avoided. The quality and quantity of the lettuce produced here is just as good as in recent years. Since it is the only region to be unaffected by the weather, many customers are attracted here.
"The lettuce production in other regions has a lower quantity and quality than in the past, due to the weather. But the quality of the lettuce in Linyi is as high as ever. Many pieces weigh 0.5 kg to 1 kg. They look pretty on the outside and are fresh of taste. They can also be eaten raw," says Mr Zhu from Shandong Linyi Lettuce Cultivation.
"The buying price of lettuce is usually between 1 RMB and 1.4 RMB per kg. Currently, the bulk price for lettuce in Linyi is around 2 RMB per kg. That is a little higher than the average. The supply season will last another month and a half. The price will be adjusted continuously."
Mr. Zhu's lettuce cultivation ground already exceeds 6 hectares, with a yield of 52500 kg per hectare. "The lettuce market is pretty good right now and the demands of the consumers are constantly increasing. If the conditions are right next year, I plan to keep expanding the cultivation scope to 13 hectares. I hope that we will then be able to produce even more high-quality lettuce to supply the market."
