Red Falstaff pears to be available on the market

Falstaff, managed by the Newplant consortium, will arrive in supermarkets next month. It is a first step towards a more widespread diffusion of this fruit over the next few years.

Falstaff has a red peel, crunchy flesh, high sugar content and good balance with its more acidic component. It can only be commercialised by the club and cultivated by producers that are part of it.

Falstaff was created as part of CREA Folrì's breeding programme by Lorenzo Rivalta and Walther Faedi. Newplant was established by Apoconerpo, Apofruit and Orogel Fresco, who retain 40% of pear production.

Researchers Gianluca Baruzzi and Giuseppina Caracciolo explain that "Crea meets with Newplant every week to analyse the situation. Every year at Crea we evaluate around 300 apples and pears and the best 5-10 are taken into consideration."

Producers are then involved with test orchards. Fruits are inspected from all point of views and technicians, producers and traders work together to analyse every single aspect.

"Over the years, Crea has introduced successful varieties such as Carmen, Boheme and Aida. We feel the cooperation between private and public sector is a truly positive thing."
