Children eat 20% more fruit than 5 years ago

In the past five years, the Dutch have started eating fewer potatoes and less fat and oil, among other things. The consumption of non-alcoholic beverages and herbs and sauces has increased. The quantity of vegetable products remained fairly similar. Children have started eating 20 per cent more fruit compared with five years ago. These are the findings of the RIVM, the Netherlands Institute for Public Health and the Environment, in the first two years of a study of the new food consumption survey from 2012 to 2016. The final results of the complete research period are expected at the end of 2018.

Per day, a Dutch person consumes three kilograms of food and drink, on average. Approximately two of those three kilograms are in the form of drinks. The composition of the food package hardly differs with age. The exception is that children eat relatively more fruit and adults drink more. The new RIVM survey shows that children aged 9 to 18 have started eating 20 per cent more fruit in the past five years. The use now amounts to 94 grammes on average per day.
