Hugo Castro, Ginafruit:

"Ecuador: "Fewer bananas now, but production will normalise"

Ecuadorian banana exports have decreased significantly in recent months, mainly because of the effects that climate changes have had on the production. Currently, the low temperatures in Ecuador continue to be a problem.

Hugo Castro, from Ginafruit, spoke about the situation: "Even though the forecasts were right, the weather's change took us by surprise. We are producing little fruit, mainly because its only cold at night and that is affecting the course of our production. Despite this, producers remain positive and hope that this situation starts to normalize at the end of December."

"Our main concern was that we had a lot of fruit in the months that Europe is on vacation, when demand significantly decreases. Fortunately, this did not happen and the prices have not been affected. Additionally, most of the European countries are not demanding as expected. Some people say that many producers are selling their fruit at a loss. The only market that has remained stable so far is Russia, where demand has increased over the weeks," said Castro.

The result of the current planting will depend on the weather conditions we have. Fortunately, we expect there will be a few degrees more in the coming months, so the forecasts for the next season are good. In our particular case, we want to grow by 50% and aim to export 75,000 boxes. Our strategy is to enter markets, such as Asia, which is considered as a complicated market that has many requirements, but that has a niche market with a promising future, concluded the representative of Ginafruit.
