World demand for seedless watermelon grows by 80%

Watermelon is a very palatable fruit, but also very healthy and interesting for the prevention of potentially lethal diseases, and in recent years, there has been a huge increase in its demand.

When looking at specific types, seedless watermelons (triploid) have recorded an 80% growth in the consumption volume compared to other varieties.

One of the reasons for this increase in the consumption of watermelons is the fruit's many antioxidants, which prevent the development of very destructive diseases in humans.

Triploid watermelons, i.e. seedless watermelons, contain twice as many antioxidants as regular watermelons. The other advantage offered by seedless watermelons is how easy they are to consume. Seedless watermelons were obtained for the first time in Japan in 1939. In Taiwan, scientist Chen Wun-you started marketing the seeds of triploid watermelons in 1962. He launched the company Know-you, which sells 16 different varieties of seedless watermelons, distributed in several countries. The production of the seedless fruit is based on the fact that triploid plants produce fruit, but fail to produce seeds due to incompatibility issues with the chromosomes.
