“Good market for Spanish mangoes, but avocado price is dropping”

The Spanish tropical fruit season has erupted again at Natural Tropic. The Spanish mango cultivation once again experienced a significant expansion this year, but according to Kenneth Meyer, the market continues to do well. “Prices for good sizes are at a nice level between 8.50 and 9 euro, so we cannot complain about those, prices for larger sizes are just below that. For organic mangoes, prices are even at 11 euro. We are still selling Osteen mangoes this month, and then we will switch to Keitt.”

However, prices for avocados have gone into freefall this week. “At the beginning of the season, prices were still around 9.50 euro for Bacon avocados, but now the price decreases every week. Hass avocados are much more expensive, at around 16 euro. The season for the Fuerte strain is expected to start in two or three weeks, and that is earlier than usual,” Kenneth says. “Cherimoyas also have a good market situation after the bad season last year. Harvest and quality is good, and prices are very satisfying at 6 euro per box.”

Natural Tropic has about 45 hectares of own cultivation, and has an area of about 100 hectares in total, when including rented land. Approximately half of that is meant for organic cultivation. “Organic is booming in Spain. We supply about 30 per cent of our mangoes and avocados organically during the Spanish season. The advantage of the organic market is that you can supply customers with fixed amounts every week. The conventional market is much more dependent on the price, in that regard,” Kenneth concludes.
