Summary of the 2015-2016 apple market

The China Fruit Marketing Association (CFMA), held the 2016 annual apple convention near Zibo in Shandong province on the 26/27th of September this year. Representatives, Marketeers, experts and scholars from all the main apple producing regions were present and together they summarised the 2015 apple production season. They analysed the apple production and sales trends of the 2016 season and determined the market and pricing tendencies. They also negotiated countermeasures for running the 2016 apple production season.

The following is a review of the 2015 apple production, the sales season and the market situation.

Production volume was up 4.1% on 2014 but the market was weak and sales were slow. Average prices in wholesale markets all over China dropped 18.92% and it was a difficult year for stores and farmers who store fruit. The whole industry had a general deficit.

On the positive side, exports (from January to August 2016) were up 81.5% compared to the same period last year. Total fruit sales for 2016 are predicted to be a staggering 1 million tons. The recovery in exports is largely due to low domestic prices. Chinese apples are mainly exported to South-East Asian countries and those low prices have improved competitiveness on the international market.
