“Italian spinach not comparable to Dutch”

Yesterday morning, Wijnand de Mooij unloaded the first spinach from his own brand, Unica Vera. According to Gert van der Bent, this summer customers were already asking when the Italian spinach would be available again. “It has arrived now, and demand is immediately good. It has been packaged in our own Unica Vera crates again, as they have been for several years now. We moisten the crates first and then cool them, before harvesting the spinach.”

Van der Bent indicates washing and cooling the spinach benefits the quality of the spinach. “We can now once again supply our customers with spinach that has a very good shelf life for an entire season. We are facing the coming season with positivity. The growing season went very well, and the spinach is also looking good.” Italian spinach is not comparable to the Dutch spinach. “Italian spinach is of the ‘hard kind,’ and that gives it a very different flavour.” Wijnand de Mooij expects to receive the Italian spinach two to three times per week.

Gert van der Bent is responsible for Italian imports at Wijnand de Mooij. In 2007, the wholesaler’s from Rotterdam, started importing from Italy under the brand, Unica Vera. By now, the assortment has expanded to include a large number of various types and mixes of lettuce. Since this year, Van der Bent is the new face of Unica Vera products. Wijnand de Mooij supplies Unica Vera products to domestic wholesalers, customers from the catering industry and exporters, based on their weekly prices.
