Panama to destroy 27,580 kilos of Peruvian onions

Yesterday, the Panamanian Authority for Food Safety (Aupsa) ordered the destruction of 27,580 kilograms of red onions from Peru because they were starting to germinate.

The onions were stored in a warehouse located in the village of Las MaƱanitas in the district of Panama, They were verified and subsequently destroyed, as they did not meet health, safety, and quality standards.

Once the bulb germinates the nutritional value of the onion decreases, so the product is no longer fit for consumption.

The Aupsa stated that the breach of good agricultural practices and management of these foods could cause the onset or prevalence of biological, chemical, or physical contaminants that could affect the consumers' health.

The Aupsa is responsible for verifying that the food entering the Isthmus meets the quality and import provisions required by the country to protect the country's public health and to preserve Panama's agricultural heritage.
