Fresh produce sales up in Dutch supermarkets
Total supermarket sales rose to €35bn in 2015, an increase of 4.6% compared to 2014. Calculated over 52 weeks, the growth was 2.5%. One segment that clearly stands out is fresh produce, with a 7.6% increase in sales over 2015. The total sales for this segment amount to some €4bn. (eurofresh-distribution.com)

Aeon debuts in Myanmar, sourcing fresh food locally
Japanese supermarket giant Aeon, has become the first foreign retailer to enter Myanmar since the 2011 transition to civilian rule. The store packs some 8,000 products into a relatively compact 613 sq. meters of sales-floor space. The lineup includes about 80 items imported from Japan, including selections from Aeon's Topvalu private brand. About 70% of the products are imported from Thailand or elsewhere, with the remaining 30%, mainly fresh foods, coming from Myanmar. (asia.nikkei.com)

US: Shoppers Food and Pharmacy stores to sell 'Misfits'
Robinson Fresh is bringing its unique Misfits™ produce line to Shoppers Food and Pharmacy grocery stores in Baltimore, Maryland, and with it, lower prices, and reduced product waste. “We understand there is produce left in the field because farmers don’t think there is a market for it,” says Hunter Winton, Robinson Fresh General Manager of the West. “With the Misfits program, farmers have an outlet to sell more produce and customers have an opportunity to save money and help reduce waste.” (andnowuknow.com)

James McCann of Ahold Delhaize resigns
Ahold Delhaize has announced that James McCann, a prominent member of its management board, has resigned from his post. McCann, who joined Ahold in 2011, has held a leadership role at Ahold’s US business since 2013. He will continue in a range of non-executive and advisory roles. Kevin Holt, currently CEO of Delhaize America, has been named as McCann’s successor. (esmmagazine.com)

Belgium: Delhaize trials range of AH-brand products

Retail-magazine Gondola, has reported that the Belgian retailer Delhaize has added a selection of private-label Albert Heijn products to its range, in a trial campaign, titled, 'Our Neighbours Have Good Taste'. (esmmagazine.com)

Spain's Eroski posts €2.8m profit in H1
Spanish retailer Eroski closed the first half of 2016 with a net profit of €2.8m, thanks largely to the company's competitiveness strategy. The retailer said that its operating income rose by 45% during the period to €54m. In the first half of the year, Eroski has sought to boost its transformation, with an investment of €45m towards refurbishing its stores, and boosting its IT equipment. (esmmagazine.com)

Thailand: Central FamilyMart set to expand

Central FamilyMart plans to double the number of its convenience stores in Thailand from 1116 to more than 2000 within five years. President Chiranun Poopat says the company will continuously expand the number of FamilyMarts to cater to a growing market and increase access to consumers in specific locations. The expansion will be achieved by capital investment as well as franchising. (insideretail.asia)

SA: Woolworths to buy non-food chain
South Africa's Woolworths Holdings plans to buy Australian men's fashion brand Politix through its subsidiary, Country Road Group, the retailer said on Wednesday. Woolworths, which sells upmarket food and clothing, said the acquisition will be funded using its own resources and is expected to immediately increase the company's earnings per share. (Reuters)

Tesco reports another rise in sales as recovery continues
Retail giant Tesco has reported another rise in sales, and says it is on track to hit its full-year profit target. Like-for-like sales, which strip out the impact of new store openings, grew 1% in the half-year to 27 August, and in the UK they rose by 0.6%. Investors welcomed the results, sending shares in Tesco up 9% in early trading. That fight has come at the expense of profits, with Tesco revealing a group pre-tax profit of £71m - down 28% on the same period last year. (BBC / Sky News)

Japan's Aeon Q2 profit edges up
Aeon on Wednesday said Q2 operating profit edged up as Japan's biggest retailer by sales bolstered income from discount shops, supermarkets and drug stores to compensate for losses at its general merchandise outlets amid weak consumer spending. Operating profit for the three months ended Aug. 31 rose 5.6% to 39.5bn yen ($384.02m) compared with 37.4bn yen a year earlier. (Reuters)

UK: Record food price fall driven by supermarket price war
Shoppers are enjoying a fourth year of falling prices as "intense" competition for customers drives deflation, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Food prices showed the highest year-on-year drop ever recorded for the industry, falling by 1.3% in September, from 1.1% in August, as an ongoing supermarket price war sees grocers battle for market share.
