Kazakhstan: Negative onion price trend continues
For the fourth week in a row, onion prices on the Kazakhstani market have dropped. Onions have become, on average, 26% less expensive in Kazakhstan over that period.
Fruit-Inform reports that for the present, prices vary between RUB 4-9/kg (USD 0.06-0.14/kg), depending on quality and shipment volume, in main producing regions. Furthermore, farmers report real sales to be conducted at no higher than RUB 7/kg (USD 0.11/kg).
It should also be noted that onion prices have fallen by another 15% in Kazakhstan over the past week, due to several reasons. In the first instance, a negative trend is backed by low demand for produce: local wholesale companies and retail chains purchase onions for their current sales, while exporters’ demand is not high. Meanwhile, farmers offer nonstandard produce in the majority of cases, and are ready to make price concessions. At the same time, growers plan to start selling high-quality onions from storage no earlier than late October.
