Germany: vegetable sales expected to increase

Last year, 4.36 million tons of fresh vegetables were sold in Germany, more or less the same than in 2010. However, as stated in the Confcooperative report, based on Euromonitor data, the trend has been fluctuating over the past five years. There was a steep growth at first, from the 4.36 million tons of 2010 to the 4.58 million in 2012, then a huge drop to the 4.28 million tons of 2013. Since then, however, sales have been growing.

Sales should increase in the future too. Estimates talk about higher volumes in 2020 than 2012 with a figure of 4.62 million tons. This will be achieved especially thanks to the increase in the sale of cauliflowers and broccoli. The sale of onions and tomatoes is expected to drop.

8.9% of the fresh vegetables sold in Germany are organic. In addition, only 14% of the produce sold is loose, while the remaining 86% is packaged.
