Tom Fusato (Brio):

Organic sector obstructed by conversion time

Tom Fusato, sales manager of Brio, confirms that the organic sector is growing both in Italy and abroad.

"We are satisfied this year despite some problems of supply of fresh fruit due to bad weather. The organic fruit and vegetable sector is growing by 15-20% per year. We export to Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France and the Nordic Countries. Liquidity for the farms has increased over the last few years. Also, the supply chain is more organised and concentrated and is able to make economies of scale".

The company, situated in Campagnola di Zevio (VR), runs throughout Italy and more than 100 hectares need to be cultivated organically.

"The most difficult part is conversion time. It usually takes 2-3 years and depends on the products. Meanwhile, the cropping farm has to trade its products conventionally, so there are problems to place them on the market", Fusato explains.

Finally, according to the manager, young businesspeople still have difficulty setting up their own organic businesses starting from scratch.
