AU: Early bursts herald successful citrus budding season

In the Riverland, Murray Valley and Riverina last month citrus bud bursts were earlier than average with shoot growth 2-4cm long according to Citrus Australia.

August daily minimum and maximum temperatures were near to slightly above average and intermittent rain fell during the month, delaying harvest on a few occasions.

“Delays were more prevalent in the Riverina than in the Riverland and Sunraysia,” Citrus Australia said. “Some frosts occurred throughout the regions but were not of economic significance.

“Budburst and subsequent shoot growth has occurred about one to two weeks earlier than average and the trees are at the white bud and early shoot expansion phase.”

This citrus season the crop has been average to slightly above average.

“It is difficult to predict district-wide cropping levels, however individual blocks flowering could be an early indicator,” Citrus Australia said.

“If very low levels of flowers are observed, then a low cropping year is expected. If a medium to high level of flowers are observed, then there is potential for a high crop load however it is difficult to predict because temperatures during the fruit setting stage can significantly impact fruit-set.”

Citrus Australia said the export season would finish in early October and overall it has been a successful year for exports. “Export shipments have increased again. No significant issues have been reported and overall export demand has been good.”
