"Sjoerd Postuma: "Heat and high retail prices hit sales of citrus fruit"

"High demand for oranges from Uruguay"

The Uruguay citrus fruit season is fully on its way at Postuma in IJsselmuiden. The wholesaler offers oranges in collaboration with Van Ooijen Citrus, of which the Salustiana is their showpiece. The major clients of Postuma are greengrocers and merchants, who really appreciate the Uruguayan citrus fruits, according to Sjoerd Postuma. He expects that the Uruguayan orange season will continue until October, after which the Spanish harvest will arrive on the market.

“The quality and shelf life of the Salustiana is very good. The price increase the retailers have introduced is rather high, but we have enough oranges available for specialist stores and we can keep the prices on a nice level,” says Sjoerd. “In the western part of our country, the Salustiana is mainly used as a juicing orange, but in our area, it is also used for eating. The market is hot, especially for juicing oranges. In all of Europe, people demand juicing oranges, and many juicing oranges are transported to Spain, because their market is empty.”

“So far, there has been a healthy interest in the citrus. The warm weather of last week was slightly disadvantageous for the sales of citrus and top fruit, but gave the sales of soft fruit a boost. The ‘easy’ vegetables were sold rapidly, while the sales of autumn and winter vegetables were slower. I expect that it will stabilise a little bit this week.”
