Two policemen injured

Costa Rica: 20 million colones stolen from pineapple farm

Four heavily armed men attacked the Banacol pineapple producing farm in Chomes de Puntarenas at noon on Saturday.

Carlos Hidalgo, a spokesman for the Ministry of Security, said the criminals stole 20 million colones that were going to be used for the payroll, kidnapped two contractors, and escaped in a pick-up vehicle.

According to Hidalgo, the kidnapped workers were later released on the road with head injuries. The assailants then continued their escape.

At about 2 pm, the subjects, who were being chased by the police, wounded two police officers at a checkpoint.

The assailants injured officers Medina and Perez, and stole two pistols and a sub-machine gun that they were carrying.

The vehicle used by the men to commit the robbery was later found in the area of La Palma, in Puntarenas.

Manolo Salguera, witnessed the assault on the police, which frightened the life out of him as he was only 25 metres from the confrontation.

"I was going to the hills when I saw four men beating two policemen. They threatened me and told me not to meddle. My car fell in a ditch as I tried to escape and got stuck there but fortunately they didn't do anything to me, I just watched them get away," Salguera stated.
