BelOrta hoping to increase organic veg sector

The vegetable producers of BelOrta gathered, on 14 September, for an information meeting about the switch to organic vegetables. Various specialists that are involved with the switch lectured the 30 producers present. Some experienced producers, who recently made the switch, were present to share their experiences with the audience.

In the audience, there were open field farmers as well as greenhouse farmers. They received information from Sander Van Haver of Biozoektboer, Justine De Witte of PCG Kruishoutem, and Katrijn Spiessens of Proefstation for vegetable production in Sint-Katelijne-Waver. There were talks from Peter Bartels and Frank Schelfhout, two producers who switched to organics a few years ago.

There were many questions afterwards at the panel discussion, showing the great interest some producers have in making the switch to organic production. At the same time, BelOrta emphasised their intention to develop this increasing market sector. To achieve this, the production of the organic growers will have to become adapted to new demands and to organise the best possible marketing of their products.
