Italy: 2016/17 kiwifruit campaign may be down 20%

CSO ITALY– Centro Servizi Ortofrutticoli published its estimates for the kiwifruit season. The total production should be of around 469 thousand tons compared to 588 thousand tons of last year, i.e. 20% less. The saleable production has been instead estimated at 450 thousand tons, only 1% less than the previous season.

All production areas experienced a decrease, and especially Lazio where, after last year's record production, volumes have fallen in line with those of 2014 (-30% with respect to 2015).

The drop seems not as big in Piedmont and Emilia Romagna (-9 and -14% respectively), while Veneto had to deal with root asphyxia. Calabria experienced a drop despite the increase in cultivated areas.

"Produce is expected to have a good shelf-life thanks to the good weather, so the market should be lively. Italy is the leading kiwifruit producer and growers are now more interested in new varieties, especially of golden kiwis," explains CSO ITALY Director Elisa Macchi.
