William Nannes, J.P. Beemsterboer Food Traders:

"Onion price fall leads to relaxed customers"

The onion export market is very one-sided. "Almost all onion export goes to Africa, predominantly through Senegal, and when that demand disappears, prices come under pressure. As long as prices are dropping, the customers will lean back," says William Nannes of J.P. Beemsterboer Food Traders.

At the moment, we get 15 cents per bag, but if things go on like this, prices will drop another 2 cents. It's not the quality, because I have not heard of any problems. But there are simply not enough destinations. Last year, we sent a lot to Brazil, but they've had a good harvest themselves and will not be buying for another few weeks."
