Apricot exports still 'alarmingly low'

South Africa: Developing stone fruit trade with Germany

During 22-26 August, AndrĂ© Smit (SASPA Chairman), Charl Stander (SASPA Board Member) and Jacques du Preez (HORTGRO) conducted meetings with the major importers and retailers of South African Stone fruit in Germany.

This is a continuation of a process initiated three years ago in order to turn around the worrying decrease in stone fruit exports to this market.

The past season experienced positive growth in exports of plums, nectarines and peaches to Germany after many years of decline. Apricot exports however decreased to alarmingly low levels, with the lack of new cultivars and innovation apparently being the main culprits.

The meetings were all held in a very constructive and positive spirit and it seems as if the future for exports to Germany looks positive. Eating quality however, remains non-negotiable.
