Slow recovery after summer holidays for CAAT

"Despite the recent holiday period, we can say that things went beyond expectations for CAAT. Nonetheless, this week started a little slow, though it seems sales have picked up," explains agronomist Daniele Gotto.

Citrus fruit is doing better. Lemons from Argentina in 6 kg crates are sold at €2.30-2.40/kg, while those in 10 kg crates are sold at €2-2.10/kg. Italian verdellos sell at €2.50-2.60/kg but demand is not very lively as people in the Turin area usually prefer yellow lemons!

The price for oranges of Argentinian origin is increasing (€1-1.10/kg) as demand gets more lively.

The price of prickly pears has been dropping since last week. It hovers between €0.75-0.80/kg for small grades sold loose, to €1.20-1.40/kg for 18, 16 or 14-fruit crates.

Prickly pears from Puglia are sold at €1.55/kg.

There are lots of peaches available at the moment, so prices are rather low. Double-layer crates from Piedmont and Emilia Romagna, sell at €0.80-0.85/kg, while those from Sicily reach €1.35/kg. A-AA-AAA Sicilian peaches in 20 to 14 fruit crates hover between €0.90 and €1.30/kg. Nectarines are more or less in the same situation, though there is a lower availability of bigger grades, so prices are 5 cents more expensive.

As regards table grapes, Victorias sell at €1.30/kg and Italia at €1.45/kg. The produce from Sicily is slightly more expensive due to its better colour and higher Brix level. Seedless grapes sold at €1.70-1.80/kg.

Moving on to top fruit, Carmen and Santa Maria pears from Emilia Romagna sell at €1.15/kg. In addition, the yellow William pear campaign is also starting and the fruit is currently sold at €1.15-1.20/Kg. The first Royal Gala from Piedmont and Emilia Romagna have also become available. Small grades loose in crates sell at €0.70-0.80/kg, while single-layer crates reach €1.25-1.30/kg.

The price of small fruits from Piedmont and Trentino varies between €11.5-12/kg for currants, blackberries and raspberries, up to €7-8/kg for blueberries and €5.50/kg for strawberries.

Smooth melon sales are still slow compared to those of netted melons, with prices around €0.50/kg for the former and of €0.80/kg for the latter with a uniform colour.

Moving on to vegetables, there are a lot of beefsteak tomatoes available and the price depends on whether plants are old or new. Produce from old category II plants sells at €0.75-0.80/kg, while it doubles if plants are new, especially since supply is still limited.

Date and cherry tomatoes in double-layer crates sell at €3.20-3.30/kg and €2.50-2.60/kg respectively. Bunch and salad tomatoes sell at €0.90-0.95/kg if they are from Italy, and can reach 40-50 cents more if from the Netherlands.

The Carmagnola pepper season has started. The price is €1.15-1.20/kg for uniform produce in double-layer crates, though those from Cuneo still sell at 50 cents more. Dutch peppers are sold at €1.80-2.00/kg.

The new potato season is over and new sacks from Puglia, Emilia Romagna, Fondi and France sell at €0.40/kg.

Despite the hailstorms that damaged courgettes and cabbages in open fields in the Chieri area, there is no shortage of the former. We will have to wait and see what will happen with cabbages, broccoli and cauliflowers.

Small light-coloured courgettes with no defects always reach a higher price (€1.20-1.30/kg) than dark-coloured ones (€0.70/kg). At the moment, cauliflowers are coming in from Brittany and Trentino and are sold at €1.60/kg.

The pumpkin season has started and single-layer crates are sold at €1.10-1.20/kg.

Round red chicory is selling well at €1.50/kg, while the early ones from Treviso sells at €2.45/kg.

Fennel price dropped to €1.30.1.40/kg - it was 20-30 cents higher until last week.
