China: Rainfall pushes up cucumber prices

After the start of autumn, the weather gradually cools. Due to the continuing rainfall, the expected cucumber market volume in Taishan region, near Tai'an city, has been downsized and prices have fallen.

Cucumber prices normally rise when the supply is low. There are two factors which account for this downturn: Firstly, hot weather and continuing rainfall. In these circumstances the cucumbers that are cultivated in the open grow more slowly and are more vulnerable to insects and diseases. Thus production volume decreases. Secondly, cold weather as the open air cucumber harvest nears its end and the supply slows down.

The weather is gradually becoming less rainy lately. As that happens, the market supply of cucumbers will partly recover. It is estimated that cucumber prices will either remain stable or go down in the last period.
