Vietnamese fruit exports to China soar

"Indochina Fruit "harvests 100 tons of passion fruit daily"

Vietnamese fruit and vegetable exports to China are coming on strongly. In July, China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announced that fresh produce exports increased by 77% year on year in the first five months of 2016 with a total of 700 million USD. Indochina Fruit farms passion fruit on 1,000 hectares in the South of Vietnam. “China is our main market and is becoming increasingly important. We notice that demand from China is growing. Purchasing power has increased substantially and we manage to fetch good prices for our produce. An explanation is that there is little domestic passion fruit production in China and Vietnam is well-known for its passion fruit”, explains Quang Thang, export manager at Indochina Fruit.

“Our main markets in China are Nanning, Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. Nanning, in Guangxi province, is the most important export destination. Due to its location, Nanning can serve as a port into China for Vietnamese produce. We mainly export to wholesale markets, which we supply through the use of reefer trucks. Passion fruit need to be transported between 15° to 20° degrees Celcius. If this temperature is maintained, the fruit will stay fresh for ten days.”

“Europe is the second most import market for us. We export to Europe by airfreight. European and Chinese clients demand similar quality. However, pesticide and residue controls are much stricter on the European market and customers demand more prerequisites, such as a Global GAP certification.”

“Consumption peaks in the months September to December. We farm on over 1,000 hectares in the South of Vietnam. During the peak season we produce between 100 and 200 tons a day. We can harvest all year around, but the weather has to be dry. High humidity affects the quality of the crop. If there are excessive rains, our harvest will be affected a lot and it could be that we will not able to harvest. This year, we experienced normal rain, which means normal production.”
