Italy: Grape campaign not positive, very few exceptions

"The data on the beginning of the table grape harvesting season in Puglia shows a sector in crisis - in 2016, production increased by 10% but prices continue to drop and are 20% lower than 2015," explains APEO President Giacomo Suglia (in the photo).

"This situation is caused by competition within the EU, and especially from Spain and Greece and particularly concerning seedless grapes. Their prices are lower and so retailers choose their produce. In addition, we now must worry about Turkey too. We are registering higher stocks than expected for all varieties. Seedless grapes must be harvested immediately otherwise they are ruined, but then we have to stock them in cold storage units thus increasing our costs."

Suglia stresses that the extended Russian ban has both direct and indirect effects, congesting the European market. What is more, the recent political disorders in North Africa have also affected sales.

That is why new destinations are being considered, and Canada seems to be a viable option. "We still have to deal with a lot of bureaucracy though, as having a good product is not enough."

As regards the Grottaglie area, Michele Sodano (in the photo below) from Ortofrutta Mele reports the campaign is in line with last years in terms of production (Victoria variety), quality and prices.

"Colouring has been delayed, but harvesting was good from mid-August onward. Prices are €0.50 more expensive than those in other areas in Puglia."

"In the end, what matters is the flavour and consumers are aware of it. Produce from Grottaglie is a point of reference for all traders."

Low prices even in Metaponto
According to ansa.it, the main problem for Metaponto producers remains the low prices at origin. In addition, they also have to deal with lower-quality Spanish and Greek grapes sold at competitive prices. The Confederazione italiana agricoltori del Metapontino reported that Basilicata, which produces almost 18,000 tons of table grapes every year (1.4% of the total domestic production) is the third most important producer with Marche, after Puglia and Sicily.
