At the National Horticultural and Innovation Expo held at Gatton during July, seed specialist Bejo showcased an assortment of vegetable varieties in the format of a field demonstration at crop maturity.
At the expo, people from all aspects of the vegetable industry could view, inspect and taste the already proven varieties grown around Australia. They could also inspect the new products emerging from Bejo’s worldwide breeding programmes.
The Bejo display showcased popular lines such as Conga celery. Conga provides field uniformity with excellent vigour and bulk for growing into the cooler weather, supplying high yields for fresh market and processing outlets.
The celery program is also being bolstered by the new variety Jive. Jive is displaying improvements in petiole length with a dark green colour, and is currently being trialled throughout Australia.
The Chinese cabbage crops were also a highlight, with the introduction of the highly productive Suzuko and Bazuko. These two new varieties stood out from the pack with exceptional weight in autumn/winter harvests, and an appealing shape and internal colour.
Bejo’s white cabbage lines are also gaining interest from growers. The variety, Capture, provides a worthy choice in crate size markets with its round shape and strong tolerance to black rot.
The event also provided the chance to view Alegria, a Capture style cabbage with improved vigour and size.
The range of cauliflowers on display showed Bejo’s strength in this market, with the tried and true Skywalker showing its durability in testing conditions. Also on display were the new varieties Toledo and Alcala.
Toledo provides tight heavy curds and a consistent cut out. Alcala is a new summer type with early uniform maturity during warm weather.
