Kenneth Meijer expects a good Spanish mango harvest

"Spanish mango acreage to stabilise after years of extension"

The Spanish mango season is ready to go. “There are some producers that started with greenhouse mangos, but these volumes are limited and they do not have the right brix percentage. Fortunately, the Spanish growers realise that it is better to wait a little longer, so that the season can start well. "We will start with the first Osteen mangos in week 36,” says Kenneth Meyer of Natural Tropic from Malaga. 



Volumes up 75 percent 
“We are hoping for a better season than last year. Our products then were of lesser quality, the volumes were much smaller and very expensive. This year, the volumes are up by 75 percent,” says Kenneth. “These numbers could have been even higher if weather conditions had been more positive during the spring. Otherwise we could have had a record year.”

He expects that the season will start with a price level between 9 and 11 euros. “This is a very general estimate. Traditionally, the prices start quite high until the market stabilizes. Under normal circumstances, we could supply Osteen mangos until the end of October. Then we switch to Keitt mangos, of which more have been planted this year. Usually these are larger sized, but this year we will have more suitable sizes available.”



Last year: not again
Spanish mango production has increased greatly over the past few years. “I hope that the supply will stabilise over the coming years, so that we will not have a repetition of last year’s dip,” says Kenneth. “Our competition usually come from Israel, where the mango season is ongoing, but is expected to cease sooner than normal. A reasonable volume will come from Brazil this year. We mainly supply to France, Germany, and the Netherlands, and we try to get our products to our customers as soon as possible. We distinguish ourselves by supplying washed mangos. Many customers ask for these.”



In addition to mangos, Natural Tropic offers avocados (bacon) at the beginning of September, followed by Fuerte in mid-October, and Hass avocados at the beginning of December. “This year we expect a large avocado harvest. We also anticipate a good year for the Cherimoyas after last year’s bad season. Furthermore, we offer Kumquat and Loquat and all of our products are available as organic,” says Kenneth. Natural Tropic has about 45 hectares of our own fields and some rented fields will be added, giving a total acreage of 100 hectares. Half of which will be for organic production. “Besides that, we have another 20 hectares of unprepared soil which can be used for planting.”
