Spain: 46,529 tons of bananas were available in April

In June 2016, Spain received 33,894 tons of bananas from the Canary Islands and 20,553 tons from Africa and Latin America, 7,918 of which were re-exported: hence, Spanish consumers had about 46,529 tons of bananas at their disposal that month. That's nearly 8,873 tons less than in the previous month, which represents a 16% decrease in the available supply. Thus, the imported banana's market share in June has ranged from a minimum of 27% and a maximum of 44% of the available supply in Spain.

The main suppliers of imported banana in June were Costa Rica with 7,105 tons, the Ivory Coast with 5,003 tons, and Colombia with 2,394; which together accounted for 71% of the volume imported. Costa Rica, the Ivory Coast, and Colombia account for nearly 72% of the value paid for banana imports with 3.6 million Euro, 3.2 million, and 1.4 million Euro, respectively.

In the first half of this year, shipments from the Canary Islands exceeded 208,719 tons, arrivals from Africa and Latin America amounted to 148,188 tons, and re-exports totaled 30,310 tons. Thus the available supply in this time period amounted to 326,597 tons, 60,870 more than in the same period of 2015. The combined market share of imported bananas has fluctuated between a minimum of 36% and a maximum of 45% of the available supply in Spain.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in the first half of the year were Costa Rica, with 38,763 tons, the Ivory Coast with 37,325 tons, and Colombia with 18,308, and accounting for 64% of the volume. Banana imports from the Ivory Coast amounted to 22.9 million Euro, from Costa Rica to 19.2 million Euro, and from Colombia 10.3 million Euro. Together, the main suppliers accounted for just over 62% of the total import value.
