The Hass avocado production project started under the existing agreement between the National Agrarian Institute (INA), the city of Las Vegas, Santa Barbara, and the Taiwan-ICDF-DICTA project.
The beginning of this project will directly benefit more than 300 producers, which will be organized and legally constituted through peasant organizations with the aim of improving technical and financial assistance.
Trade relations with agricultural exporters and supermarkets will also be established.
Expectations are that producers will harvest some 7,000 pounds of avocado per hectare in the third year of production and that said amount increases throughout time, which would allow them to be competitive in the local market and improve their standard of living.
Ramon Lara, head of INA, said that this project would guarantee the food security promoted by the Government. The INA will provide continuous technical assistance and training on nutrition, health, harvest, and orchard management.
They also expect to strengthen the productive, business, organizational and commercial capacity of the peasant organizations dedicated to this crop.
