New York’s onions will be “fair”, challenged by weather

New York growers have not started with their own crops yet but are seeing a decent supply of medium yellow and jumbo yellows with California crop coming off and Washington starting up for the season. “Right now we’re not into our own crop yet,” said Michelle Gurda of A. Gurda Produce. “Inventory is adequate at this point with all colors. Pricing is steady, with reds having a weak undertone.”

Local harvest from Orange County, New York will be taking place towards the beginning of September, supply, quality and price should be steady, according to Gurda. Dry weather made it challenging on all crops especially the greens (kale, black kale, collards, lettuces, scallions, cilantro, arugula and spinach) mixed with two recent weeks of rain. “I think it was a little too late on some crops. The rain the last couple of weeks has been good (for the onions).”
