Bruno Fosa, de Limones Piuranos:

"Peru: "Tahiti lime exports are in a process of expansion"

Tahiti limes are gaining more popularity worldwide and could eventually replace conventional limes, mainly in the months when there are shortages of this product. Peru, which has the ideal weather conditions for the crop's production, is taking the initiative with its cultivation.

Bruno Fosa Villar, of Limones Piuranos, told us about the current situation. "The climate and soil quality make northern Peru suitable for the cultivation of lemons for most of the year. In Peru, the most consumed lemon is the Sutil, a smaller variety with a flavour similar to that of the Tahiti. Our experience with the cultivation of this variety will help us a lot in the production of the Tahiti."

It is clear that the product will strengthen the country's competitiveness against other Latin American countries that have so far led the lime market, such as Mexico and Brazil, but Peru is still in the beginning of this adventure and is seeking permanent buyers to expand its investment. "This year, we'll start exporting Tahiti limes to Europe with an organic version, which is one of the most demanded on this continent. And as we analyse the level of acceptance from consumers, we'll try to expand our shipments to other continents," affirms Fosa.

It is worth highlighting that Limones Piuranos has experience in the production and marketing of limes, both fresh and in processed products, such as essential oil for the United States and Europe and dehydrated shavings, which are strongly demanded by Denmark.
