The Council of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Water of the Government of the Canary Islands has officially published the quality standards that will need to be met by the pumpkins and sweet potatoes produced in the Archipelago for them to be allowed to bear the label of the outermost regions (RUP); a quality label aimed at improving awareness and consumption of agricultural products from the outermost regions, both in their natural state or processed.
The regulation sets the conditions for aspects such as cultivation techniques, production or manufacture, as well as presentation and packaging. Other issues taken into account include the appearance of the product, its size or the characteristics of the materials used in packaging.
About one hundred producers devoted to the cultivation of tomatoes, cucumbers, bananas, avocados, pineapples, wine, eggs, tuna or meat, among others, already benefit from the label's advantages.
The RUP label serves to distinguish agricultural or food products, including fish, processed and unprocessed, produced in the Canary Islands after due request. Its granting must be authorised by the Canarian Institute of Food Quality after they demonstrate their unique features and superior quality.
