Ukraine: Fruit prices down, greenhouse veg up
Over the past week, vegetable prices in Ukraine increased by 12 percent, meanwhile, fruits on average became 10 percent cheaper. Cucumbers and tomatoes influenced the increase in vegetables prices as they rose in price by 20-25 percent.
Fruit-Inform reports that tomatoes became more expensive due to an increase in exporters’ demand, while growth in cucumber prices was backed by active demand in the domestic market and limited supply.
At the same time, prices of traditional vegetables were stable in the majority of cases. Trading and purchasing activity was not high; however, farmers were rarely ready to make price concessions, as they considered a further decrease in prices unprofitable for them.
Potatoes became 9% less expensive due to lower demand. Some farmers have hence decided to stop harvesting potatoes under these price conditions.
The fruit and berry market was characterized by a decrease in prices of many categories. Apple sellers reduced their prices by 8% due to moderate demand and a seasonal rise in the supply. A seasonal factor also led to a decrease of 25% and 30% in prices of watermelons and melons, respectively. Meanwhile, peach prices stabilized thanks to lower competition with Moldovan produce in the Ukrainian market and a rise in the demand.
