Peter Wijnen, Frankort & Koning:

“Price of leek remains stable due to limited supply”

Currently, the sales of leek are calm. Yet according to Peter Wijnen, responsible for the sales of leeks for Frankort & Koning, prices remain at a decent level. “The market was very good in June and July, following the good market of cold storage leeks in April and May. Because of that, we now do not feel pressure to harvest. If we had more supply, we would also have more pressure on prices. What also counts is that we had the usual shortages for other outdoor vegetables, such as cauliflower and broccoli.”

Trade price is currently around 60 cents, although the price for leeks has been much higher in Belgium for a while already. According to Wijnen, sales are mostly focused on southern Europe and the domestic market. “We sporadically send freight to the UK, but not too often. Traditionally, demand for leek increases from September, when the holiday season is over. Domestic retailers then have more promotions as well, and we have more demand from southern Europe.”

Wijnen characterises the quality as changeable. “Many plots became too wet after the extreme rainfall, causing shelf life of leeks to be less than ideal or causing a lot of labour. Other places, and higher-placed plots have superb-quality leeks. The leek area remained fairly stable. Leeks for the winter season were planted late. The weather conditions will determine what the crop will look like. But we are feeling positive about the winter season, and we are also positive about sales and price developments.”
