Last Friday the new Bowa building for onion sorting and packaging station from Waarda was finalised. The Dignus brothers', Jan and Jozé Boone started their activities in 1990 and now the annual processing capacity is at around 50,000 tonnes of onions.
Through Dutch exporters, the onions find their way across the world in packagings from 4kg to big bags. A long desired dream was achieved with the new building.
"We completely took down the old building and placed a new level on the new building, where the offices and canteen are now located," says Jozé, who coordinated the construction. "A long period of preparation preceded the new building. The licensing route in particular took up a few years, but the construction went well and the result is excellent!"
The completion took place last Friday and they had a beer with the suppliers at the new building. "We now have much more space and have air conditioning and mechanisation cooling everywhere, which makes it better to work. The computers were moved from the old building, but everything else is new, from the phones to the alarms," says Jozé.
The new onion season has been on for a few weeks now and the new harvest is being sorted.
"Onions bought by us go through a number of procedures. We make sure the onions are cleaned and remove any leaves. Then the onions are sorted by size. During this process there are a number of manual checks, so that we're certain the onions are of the highest quality," says the packager. "Thankfully, the sales are quick at the moment. Certainly since Friday afternoon there has been considerable demand."
