Russians put more faith in fruit, veg markets
According to a study carried out by Nielsen, 64 percent of Russian consumers believe that seasonal produce from markets is tastier than produce from retail chains. The study ‘’Russian consumers in the new economic conditions’’ reveals that two out of three Russians believe that the choice at open markets is bigger, and half are sure that the prices are lower.
"In many ways the view that fresh produce on the open market is tastier, is connected to the fact that the supplies there are mainly domestic or from neighboring countries, due to which in the eyes of the consumers these products appear safer and fresh", explained Marina Erskova from Nielsen.
Every third Russian began to buy less fresh vegetables in June-July compared with the same period of 2015. Russians also reduced their purchases of seasonal fruits and fresh berries by 43% and 44%.
Russians put the sharp increase in prices down as the reason for economising. At the same time, 16% of buyers purchase fewer vegetables because they grow their own. Another 20% gave the same reason, when asked about buying seasonal berries. 15% of respondents buy less fruit because they were unimpressed by product quality.
