Viveros California now producing over 100 million strawberry plants

Viveros California S.L. was established when Antonio Medina Lama understood the potential of cultivating strawberries in the Huelva region (Spain). In the late 1950s/early 1960s, he started growing strawberries imported from California with innovative techniques - PVC mulching films, small polytunnels and side irrigation.

A few years later, he bought a company in Tordesilla, where he started producing strawberry plants on a large scale. Today, it produces over 100 million plants which are then sold in Spain, Italy, North Africa, Greece, Portugal, Germany, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

Viveros California is now one of the leading nursery gardens in Spain and is managed by his daughter Rocio Medina Muñoz, while her son Felix Catano is slowly becoming involved in the family business.

The first producers were sent to Italy in 1993 thanks to the insistence of general director Antonio Arjona. Mario Magnagni from Mia Sas recalls that "when we talked about fresh plants, everyone told us it was impossible. But we were right, because now 95% of the strawberries planted in the south are either fresh plants or plugs."

Viveros California is proud of having contributed to the development of these innovative techniques in southern Italy. Plants can be either stored in refrigerated units, where they maintain high sugar levels, or sold fresh, guaranteeing a quick post-transplant development.

The varieties include Pajaro, Camarosa, Primoris, Albion, Festival, Sant Andrea, Ventana, Candonga (licence conculded in 2015), Amiga, Antilla, Fortuna as well as Favette Frigo and Fresca (for Terracina only). In addition, there are the latest varieties such as Marisol, Petaluma, Frontera, Rabida and Margherita.

The company is also producing around 20 million plugs of Fortuna, Festival and Sant Andrea, over a million of which are destined to Italy.
A lot is being invested in the research of new varieties for the north which should be ready in a few years' time. In addition, the San Rafael raspberry variety will be launched soon.

"Our technical assistance service is always available to provide advice on the most suitable area, variety and plant type. Viveros California aims at developing new varieties and technologies for its producers."
