Sainsbury's making banana bread
Britain wastes 160m bananas a year
UK supermarket chain Sainsbury's has found that one in three people bin bananas if there is a single bruise or mark on the skin and all the wasted bananas in Britain would stretch from the UK to New Zealand if laid out on the floor.
Sainsbury’s head of sustainability Paul Crewe said: “We want to encourage shoppers to give bruised bananas a chance. Avoidable food waste is a growing problem in the UK, and we can all do our bit to make a difference.
“So if the thought of eating a banana that is slightly bruised really puts you off, throw it into a smoothie or banana bread mix instead of the bin."
Bananas are the country’s favourite snack, with Brits eating on average three a week and one in five eating one every day.
Sainsbury’s is trialling measures to reduce its food waste, including making banana bread with fruit on or past its sell by date.
Mr Crewe added: “From this week, we'll be trialling loaves of banana bread baked fresh in store, using fruit at or after its sell-by date.
“The bread will be available at selected in-store bakeries, and we estimate that this trial alone will save more than 1,000 bananas."
