Watermelon prices high despite low consumption

The watermelon season isn't going as expected. "The weather isn't on our side and there is a lot less demand. One day it's sunny and the next cloudy. The demand is also lower due to the holiday period. A lot of people are away. When it comes to just demand we have had better seasons," says Patrick de Roeck of De Roeck en Zonen.

Smaller supply

Despite the lower consumption prices for watermelons aren't low. "This is because there is less production in Spain and the supply is smaller. For the top quality melons 80 to 90 cents is being paid. If Spain has a production like in other years we would have prices around 40/50 cents/ The fact that there isn't too much volume at the moment is the only advantage this season."

De Roeck en Zonen has been working with Sucre for 15 years now and is the exclusive importer for Belgium for fruit under this brand. How it will go in the coming weeks depends on the demand. "If it's good weather the consumption will rise. We have a month to finish this season well. We'll do our best."
