Switzerland: organic fruit more and more popular

The Swiss retail sector sold 38,382 tons of organic fruit in 2015. That is 5,494 tons more than in the previous year (+16.7%). For example, the sales of organic bananas have increased with 1,530 tons.

Bananas and apples bestsellers
In 2015 18,676 tons of organic bananas were sold, making them the undisputed number one in the organic segment; organic apples were in second place with 4,091 tons. The bananas were able to increase their lead on the organic apples, especially regarding the turnover of bananas. This growth was mainly due to the increase in sales volume: the average price of organic bananas dropped with 2.8%. Between 2014 and 2015, there was a small price increase of about 1.4% for organic apples.

Citrus and soft fruit: more sales, lower prices
Just like the bananas, the increase in sales volumes of citrus and soft fruit went together with decreasing prices. Compared to 2014, the turnover changed for every fruit variety in a different way in 2015. The organic blueberries had an increase of 3.6 million Swiss Franc (3.31 million euro) (+44%) even though the price dropped 4%, because 171 tons (+51%) of blueberries were sold extra. The organic strawberries did not have an increase in turnover with a price drop of 6% and a sales increase of 6.8%.

2015: year of the avocado
In 2015, almost 80% more avocados were sold than in the previous year, with slightly increased prices (+0.6%). Avocados have gone up to the fifth place (+four places) due to an increase in turnover of 7.1 million Swiss Franc, leaving the organic oranges far behind.
