Coop San Giuliano places its bets on saffron

Saffron has arrived in the Caltanissetta province thanks to the San Giuliano di Niscemi cooperative. "It is part of a diversification plan that started in 2014 with asparagus. We have carried out transplants in 2015 and this year we will have the first harvest," explains sales manager Edoardo Carmisicano.

"Harvesting is carried out before dawn, before the flowers blossom. Our saffron is pure, we do not add elements such as turmeric of paprika. We have already sold some to a few starred chefs in Sicily and there is already a lot of demand for next year."

"In September, we will attend Macfrut in the Meridiem Seed stand, who we cooperate with thanks to Buscema and Scrimano."

In the meantime, the Canary yellow melon campaign has ended. "There have been some problems in a small area but otherwise the product was excellent with good Brix levels. There have been some complaints on the market because melons from other areas were overripe inside due to the heat or wrong fertilisation. Luckily everything went well for us and sometimes we did not even manage to meet daily demand."

"Now we are preparing greenhouses and tunnels for pepper transplants in August. We have already transplanted open field peppers that will start production in September. Peppers are our forte and, this year, they will be one of the one hundred products under the Conad brand."
