Polish blackcurrant yield plummets

This year, Polish industry experts are expecting a significant drop in blackcurrant yields, mainly due to poor weather conditions. According to estimates from the Polish National Association of Blackcurrant Growers (KSPCP), local farmers in 2016 will gather 50-60 percent less fruit than in 2015. Overall, the total volume of blackcurrants is not expected to exceed 40,000 tonnes.

Fruit Inform reports that the main reason for such a sharp drop in the harvest, according to experts, is the unfavourable weather for blackcurrant cultivation, which has persisted for the past few years.

Moreover, according to the farmers, low demand has resulted in low profitability, hence they have had to save on plant protection products, which has also had a negative impact on the gross yield.
