Naturelle switches to bio-based packaging

Naturelle packages its products in compact cardboard enriched with tomato fibres from now on. This makes Naturelle the first supplier of organic fruits and vegetables that chooses a sustainable and environmentally conscious packaging based on bio-based cardboard.

Bio-based cardboard
The bio-based packaging is made from compact cardboard enriched with tomato fibres. Coming from the same surface the tomatoes grow on, the tomato plant has now become a raw material for the compact cardboard tomato packaging. Normally the life cycle of these plants ends by composting, but now these plant residues are used for the production of high-quality compact cardboard, which is also recyclable. The raw materials are being fully reused in this manner, and contribute to the circular economy. In recent years, a unique consortium of partners, including The Greenery and packaging supplier Solidus Solutions, has been working together to make this sustainable application a reality.

Making the chain sustainable
“Naturelle is continually looking for sustainability, and this is an integral part of the management. Together with our cultivators and chain partners we focus on sustainable cultivation methods and packaging. By choosing bio-based cardboard for our boxes of five kilograms, we use plant material as an auxiliary raw material, and we drive back the future use of land for logging,” says Jurgen van ’t Hoff, manager with Naturelle.

Naturelle starts delivering its tomatoes in bio-based packaging boxes of five kilograms this week. Next week, a 1.5 kilogram box will also be available.
