Over 50 $ per box

All-time peak in avocado prices

The Mexican avocado campaign is in a time of transition between the old and the new season, and prices are at an "all-time peak." "Right now, the avocado trade is rather slow, because we are waiting to receive authorization to start with the new harvest and the new exports to the US," affirms Celso Castillo, of Promega. "We hope to start exporting the new harvest to the United States on 4 July."

Until then, it will be difficult to have reliable prospects. The exporter believes that any forecast made now is practically just conjecture.

However, he explains that, at this time, given the very little supply, the price of the old harvest is very high. "It has skyrocketed. The fruit is sold for over 50 $ per box, which is a historic milestone. Mexican producers hope to start the new harvest with higher prices, but no one knows how high they will actually be at that time."

According to the producer, the forecasts are based on the little volume supplied by Peru and California. In fact, he adds, California producers are very happy, because they are taking advantage of these high prices. "This type of situation benefits the US avocado industry," he concludes.
