Onion price on the up

Same as last year, onions everywhere go on the market at the end of May. Garlic and onions have a pricing season every three to four years. In 2014, that price dropped sharply to 0.35RMB/500g, leading to a reduction of the total Chinese cultivation area for onions by 30% in 2015. Production decreased and prices increased.

No steep price drops this year. Overall, the cultivation area for onions increased a bit, but production volumes are still as low as last year due to the cold weather.

In Feng county in Jiangsu, the main onion production region, the cultivation area has shrunk by 30% compared to 2015 because of the downward onion incomes. Due to the weather, the average production per hectare is down by 16666 kg.
