French seaport opens bidding for operators

The seaport of Sète is launching a call for proposals to identify one or more terminal operators for the concession of a reefer terminal in the South of France, able to handle both pallets and reefer containers. "We are looking for an operator experienced in managing port terminal and specialised in handling fruit and vegetable products," said Arnaud Rieutort, Commercial Director of the Port of Sète.

The scope of the consultation covers a modern temperature controlled warehouse with 23,000m² fitted with refrigeration equipment suitable for the storage of fruit and vegetables or other food sorts. Bidders will have also the possibility to operate a 2 hectare reefer yard including 140 plugs.

"70% of the warehouse area is dedicated to transit and cross docking activities with 3 zones of temp variation (5-7°/8-10° and 11-14°) and 30% is dedicated to cold storage with 10 cold cells with height for 4 stacked pallets making a capacity of 15,000 pallets."

"A multimodal network is available within the port thanks to easy and direct access to the main highway A9 (Italy-Spain) located only 8km away, and a railway network with direct access to the quays."

The Port of Sète is the second deepest port in the South of France, port equipment offers 60 and 40 ton STS gantry cranes with berthing capacities able to accommodate large vessels with a water depth of 12m on quay E and 13.5m on quay H.

The port has an inspection point agreement where phyto and veterinary authorities can carry out inspections on goods after the process of discharging. "Moreover, simplified procedures have been implemented with the local customs office, through the Cargo Community System AP+, in order to facilitate the EDI and PDD process."

"The global market has accounted for 62 million tons (+30%) since 2000. In France, 46% of the local consumption comes from overseas, so it remains an asset for a port to offer adapted reefer facilities to handle part of this volume being a gateway in the Mediterranean. The advantage of Sète is a strategic location in the Western part of the Mediterranean close to supermarket/hypermaket distribution platforms and close to Africa where short-sea connexions can be used on a regular basis."

The deadline for bidders is fixed end of October.
