Diederick Knijnenburg, Oakfield:

“Sales white mushrooms quite good, unlike brown mushrooms”

The summer period is never the ideal time for the sales of mushrooms. “An abundant supply of imported stonefruit and vegetables from our own country means mushrooms will always be less popular for a short period. But cultivators anticipate this and always produce a little less during this period,” says sales manager Diederick Knijnenburg of Oakfield Champignons.

“For the white mushrooms this strategy worked fairly well, and the market is quite balanced now. There are no large surpluses and the product is being sold fairly well. This is not the case for brown mushrooms, and supply is higher than demand. Special mushrooms, such as shiitake and oyster mushrooms, are doing quite well, but they rarely have many ups and downs, except during the holidays,” explains Knijnenburg.

“Besides the domestic market, sales are centred on fixed market destinations such as Germany, the UK and France. Export to Belgium was very calm after the attacks, but is now recovering again,” Knijnenburg concludes.
