US: Good movement on imported tomatoes

Sales of tomatoes imported from Mexico have been brisk recently as supplies from Florida are all but gone.

“The tomatoes we import are coming from Reynosa, which is in the eastern part of Mexico,” noted Manny Cota with Ergo Produce in McAllen, Texas. “The stuff going to Nogales, Arizona is coming from Obregon and Guaymas in Sonora as well as Los Mochis in Sinaloa.”

Cota noted that movement on Romas has been good, though he believes the market for rounds has been a little more active.

On June 8, prices for a 25-pound carton of imported Roma tomatoes at Texas crossings were between $8.30 and $9.00 for extra large sizes. Prices throughout the border with Mexico have largely been similar for Romas.

“Rounds have gotten up to $10.00 for 25-pound cartons, and I think that's about right for this time of year,” said Cota. “I think the market should stay active, though it's always dependent on the weather.”
