Start of new sweet potato season

“Our Chinese sweet potatoes will conquer Europe”

“China is the world’s largest sweet potato producing country in terms of acreage and production volumes. However, due to traditional production and limited access to processing and storage facilities, export has been limited. We started ten years ago cultivating sweet potatoes, and have gradually moved towards exports. Over the past years, demand has grown rapidly. In order to meet demand, we expanded our production capacity this year. We also invested in storage facilities, an automated cleaning line, a packaging line and we have been expanding our planting base. Now we have over a thousand tons in cold storage capacity and strong export expertise,” says Jenny Ma of Shandong Jining Green Living International Trade.

Harvest to start in the end of June
“We have launched our Sweet Girl sweet potato branch. At this moment, we sell 30% of our crop in China. The other 70% to markets overseas, including Europe and Dubai. The season begins at the end of June and runs until April the following year. Due to cold weather in the beginning of 2016, the start of the season will be two weeks later. Market price and yield are expected to be similar to last year’s.”

“We specialise in red skinned sweet potatoes with orange coloured flesh (known as the GL88 variety). We also grow purple and red skinned with white flesh sweet potatoes. Thanks to strict quality control and advanced production lines, sales have been steadily growing year on year. Last year we sold three times more than in the previous year. This year we are expected to increase our sales by three to four times. We have established a good reputation and export high quality products. We are doing our best to spread our products across the globe and we hope that overseas consumers will enjoy our Chinese sweet potatoes.”

Frozen, roasted sweet potatoes to be the new craze
“Next to fresh sweet potatoes, we also sell frozen roasted sweet potatoes. These can be prepared in the oven in restaurants or at people’s homes. The product is fully prepared, and only need to be heated up by the client. We wash the sweet potatoes and roast them. After that, the potatoes are frozen to minus 18 degrees and exported as such. Last year, we exported 300 tons of frozen roasted sweet potatoes to Korea. Our product has been sold in 32 restaurants in South Korea during a three month test period. During this period our product turned out hugely successful, it even ranked the restaurant’s top dish during a number of weeks. After that, demand quickly increased. The frozen roasted sweet potatoes are packed in two kilogram bags. Each box containers five bags of, in total, ten kilograms.”

“This year, we expanded our export to Europe, Japan and Russia. So far we have been the only Chinese company that has developed this product. Preparation of our roasted sweet potatoes is convenient. The products only needs to be heated in the oven for a couple of minutes. The taste is moderately sweet with a nice fragrance. Sweet potatoes contain a lot of vitamins and minerals and fit greatly in a healthy diet. Therefore I believe also on the European market our product will be a success.”
